Summer Course Content

Essential Mathematics Course

This course is intended for children who have not completely mastered the basic elements of mathematics. It focuses on the connection between number, decimals, fractions, percentages and ratios. This is essential learning for the CEM 11+ examinations in Bucks and Berks and for GL Assessment style 11+ Maths tests.

The core materials include AET Maths Books 1-3, additional textbooks from other publishers, an alternative set of short test materials and additional full-length tests. AET books 4 and 5 will also be provided for revision purposes.

There will be a multiple-choice mock examination and follow-up session on the last day of the Essential Maths course.

Verbal Activity and Non-verbal Reasoning Course

This Verbal Activity element of the course covers all the essential elements required for both verbal ability and non-verbal reasoning required by CEM in the Bucks and Berks 11+ examinations and verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning required by GL Assessment in some other grammar examinations.

This course should be contemplated if children are not fully competent in what is required for the CEM test.

The following areas will be covered:

Verbal Activity
Verbal ability comprises: comprehension; cloze activity; synonyms, antonyms and homonyms; and syntax.

Verbal reasoning comprises: basic logical/processing techniques and additional work on the English components of GL Assessment style VR tests that also have relevance to CEM 11+ tests.

Non-Verbal Reasoning

This will cover all the techniques required by GL Assessment and CEM style non-verbal tests. 3D rotation is specifically required by CEM and this will be covered in detail.

The core materials will include AET Verbal Activity books 1-4 and AET Non-verbal Reasoning books 1-3. These books will be supplemented with additional short tests used in class and a substantial body of extra support material in order to reinforce children's understanding and skillset.

There will be a multiple choice mock examination and follow-up session on the last day of the Verbal Activity and Non-verbal Reasoning course.

English Course

This is an advanced course and should be considered if children are facing a specific English examination in the 11+. It can also be a useful means of boosting a child's English skills to a much higher level and making a pass score more likely in the CEM tests. If your child is sitting for a first division grammar school this is excellent additional learning that can further enhance their performance.

The course comprises the following:
• Work from a creative writing series of books. Children will write a number of stories and redraft each one during the course. Children's English improves when they learn to use the language creatively.
• Extensive test practice and instruction in comprehension skills. This will involve close study of prose and poetry.
• Components designed to improve the children's grammar, syntax, spelling and vocabulary
• Extra full-length test practice materials designed to reinforce learning.
The mock examination will include a grammar, syntax, spelling, vocabulary and comprehension (multiple choice) test and a creative writing (written) test and a follow-up session on the last day of the course.

Advanced Mathematics

This is a challenging course and it should be considered if children are facing a specific Mathematics examination in the 11+. It can also be a useful means of improving a child's mathematics skills even further so they can perform above the level of the required tests. It should be considered if your child is sitting for a first division grammar school.

The course comprises the following:
• Coverage of the AET Maths books 6 and 7 in full. At the end of the course children will be fully versed with algebra and even be able to do simultaneous equations and handle the complexities of scientific calculators.
• A full revision programme of the core topics covered in AET Maths books 1-5 (number, decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios and probability)
• Additional advanced Maths test materials devised for and only used on this course.
There will be a multiple choice mock examination and follow-up session on the last day of the Advanced Maths course.
