State Grammar

11+ Examinations are sat in year 6 for year 7 entry. This is the normal mode of entry.

Berkshire Grammar Schools

Entry is decided by examination only, so external candidates can sit for a place. Schools will usually request parents come to their open evenings where application forms are available (They prefer not to post). Applications are made in late August and early September in the run up to the examination in November. Each year the examination will be sat on the first Thursday in November for children within catchment (in their own schools) and on the following Saturday for children out of catchment (at their nominated school).

Information can be obtained from Slough Borough Council about the four grammar schools in Slough. Langley, Herschel, Slough and St Bernard's Catholic Grammar can also be contacted directly. The exam comprises Maths (50 mins), Verbal Reasoning (50 mins) and Non-verbal Reasoning (20 mins) NFER multiple choice papers in these four schools. The pass marks are: Slough - 111; Hershel - 111; Langley - 117 and St Bernard's - 111 (Catholics given preference). The maximum score achievable is 141. The score is calculated by averaging the three papers which have equal weighting.

Reading School and Kendrick Girls need to be contacted separately as they have their own entry procedure. The Kendrick exam involves standard NFER papers in Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal Reasoning. Reading School requires Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning or Non-verbal Reasoning and English. Entry is by examination only.

Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools

Entry is decided by examination, but catchment can be a restriction to external candidates. The schools have different catchment policies and should be contacted directly for details about this. Applications for entry should be made to the Admissions Team in Aylesbury for external candidates. Eligible candidates within catchment areas are usually contacted by their own schools about the examination.

Applications are made in late August early September in the run up to the September/October examinations.

The exam comprises the sitting of two separate NFER multiple choice papers (50 mins) on two different days. The top scoring paper counts and the other discarded. The score required is 121 out of a possible 141 score. Each year the exams will be sat on two separate days in early October for internal candidates. External candidates usually sit later on two appointed days in at a designated school in Aylesbury. External candidates may also be required to score higher to achieve a placement.
