Yes. Each subject area has an information section followed by a technique section.
Yes. Once children have fully understood all the information and read through the technique section they can go on to practise the skills acquired by doing the practice questions.
The Maths workbooks are arranged in order of topic. This is a traditional approach to teaching Maths. Children move through the topics in sequence and each skill that is learnt builds on the skills already acquired. All the subject areas of the National Curriculum are covered up to level 6 but in a structured rather than sporadic format. Please refer to the content tabs for more information on the subjects covered in each book.
The Spelling and Vocabulary Workbooks 1-12 comprise a complete set of books to enable children to learn to spell, and use in context, over 5,400 words. Although the foundation books 1-3 may appear too basic for year 5 children, they do contain 1,380 of the total words to be learnt. The order of the words throughout the books is not simply progressive in their difficulty. In our tuition centre, all our year 5 children complete all the books in order. That way they do not miss any of the words, some of which may not be known to them. To help you decide which books you feel would suit your child, a word list for each workbook is included within the content tab of each title.
Yes. The answers are at the back of each book, together with progress charts and a certificate of achievement.
The short testbooks in Verbal Reasoning, Non-verbal reasoning and Maths have been devised to enable children to practise skills contained in the workbooks. Most children complete each test in around 15-20 minutes. Although timing is important in the real 11+ tests, it is more important that children are accurate in the early stages of preparation so these tests should not be rushed.
We do not have past papers but we recommend that, having completed a series of our workbooks followed by the testbooks, children use the GL Assessment Practice Papers for further practice and to prepare them for the actual exam. These can be purchased from our bookshop, click here.
Although our books are primarily for Year 5 children preparing for the 11+ or common entrance exams, the Multiplication Tables book and the Spelling and Vocabulary series are suitable from Year 3 onwards. We have Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal Reasoning testbooks for both Year 3 and Year 4 and are currently writing corresponding workbooks for these which will be available for purchase late 2013.
All our books provide an excellent foundation for children facing common entrance examinations in the independent sector and 12+/13+ examinations in the grammar system. Verbal Reasoning techniques at 11+ through to 13+ do not vary except in the level of difficulty. Our Maths workbooks are suitable for preparing children for common entrance exams as they take children to SATs level 6. The Spelling and Vocabulary books at advanced level (books 8-12) also provide an excellent way of improving a child’s vocabulary and spelling.
All AET 11+ courses are fully supplied with AE Tuition workbooks and testbooks so there is no need to purchase them. For all other courses, we advise you to discuss individual needs with the teacher once your child has started the course.
We do not supply inspection copies but offer a 21-day money back guarantee, provided that the books are returned to us unused and in excellent condition. Books must be returned at the customer’s expense.
Apart from our own material we only sell GL Assessment Official 11+ Practice Papers which we recognize as the most authentic practice papers available.
The discount price is only available for books purchased in a single transaction.
